"Graphic photographs of mangled fetuses greeted people approaching campus. One sign depicted an old black-and-white photo of the lynching of a black man, a picture of Mr. Obama and what appeared to be the feet of an aborted fetus. The caption read, “We’ve come a long way. Or have we?".

"Many demonstrators had no affiliation with Notre Dame and were not even Catholic. “You’re not a Christian university,” shouted Mona Wenger, 54, who said she was not a Catholic. “You have invited the worst baby killer in the nation".

"A morning mass for those wising to express their opposition to abortion — and perhaps their opposition to the Obama invitation — drew a subdued crowd of perhaps a few hundred. Jim Leeson, 65, came from Garrett, Ind., to attend the mass and “prayerfully protest,” he said".

"It’s time for this university to get back to its roots and values,” he said. “I’m glad this is happening here. This university holds an image all over the world. Many Catholics are waking up to say, ‘Oh, no!’".

"After the mass, a slide show sponsored by a group of conservative Notre Dame students featured the voice of a woman saying: “What if all the students at Notre Dame stood up and said, "No Obama is not coming here, That would be a statement that we believe in life". The remark drew polite applause".

"But there were few people in graduation robes in the crowd and most of the student body seemed to shrug at the demonstration".

"Melissa Pirkey, a sociology graduate student, stood alongside the anti-abortion protesters with her own placard: "This ND student welcomes Obama".

"She said carried the sign because she believed Notre Dame was “being inaccurately portrayed” as hostile to the president, noting most students voted for Mr. Obama in a mock election".

"With mortarboard in hand, graduating senior Robert Kessler, 22, wandered among the protesters and shook his head".

"Some of these pictures are grotesque, and I don’t want them to be part of my graduation,” said Mr. Kessler, an Obama supporter. “If these groups wanted to make a difference, they could have better used their money on homes for unwed mothers".
