"03.07.2009."As she waits for her job search to garner results, Janis Greener is taking advantage of the lowest end of the job pool: the unpaid internship.
"I thought about volunteer work, but this appeals to me more. This way I can keep utilizing my computer skills," said Greener, who is doing sales and marketing work for nojobjitters.com".
"The website is billed as a one-stop shop for job hunters and offers members contact information as well as details on training sessions and job fairs".
"Greener was a marketing manager for Artistic Innovations, a home decor company, for more than two years and lost her job when the company went bankrupt in July".
"The 58-year-old Mississauga resident estimates she has sent out close to 300 resumés. She has been shortlisted for a few jobs; next week she expects to find out if she will be hired as an assistant account manager for a manufacturing company".
"The waiting game is stressful, she says".
"You go through highs and lows. You get on a roll and start going up the roller coaster because you have an interview and your hopes are up, then you find out – boom."Money is tight. After she was laid off she used Employment Insurance to cover rent and utilities".
"Greener used her unemployment as a chance to go back to school. Last month she took a three-week provincial program, called the Experienced Workers Program. She says it offered workshops on everything from personality assessment to selling yourself during an interview. "It is a great program," said Greener. "I can't say that enough to people."
