"21.02.2010."Gordon Brown is impatient, gets angry and won't take no for an answer from his staff, Peter Mandelson said today. Addressing allegations about the Prime Minister's temper in a new book, "The End of the Party" by Observer journalist Andrew Rawnsley, the First Secretary of State insisted that it paints an inaccurate picture".

"Mr Rawnsley has a "book to sell" and suggestions that Lord Mandelson told Mr Brown he was the "worst Prime Minister in history" are "completely untrue". But Lord Mandelson this morning confirmed Mr Brown, his erstwhile political foe, could be bad tempered with those around him".

"It seems to be a story of a man who is quite tenacious and passionate who gets angry chiefly with himself," he told The Andrew Marr Show".

"He doesn't bully people, I don't think he so much bullies people as is very demanding of people around him. "He doesn't like taking no for an answer from anyone. "He will go on and on until he's got a policy or an idea that can go on".

"There is a degree of impatience about the man but what do you want, a shrinking violet?". Asked on the BBC whether he has been hit by Mr Brown, Lord Mandelson suggested they had been in "metaphorical" combat, saying: "I think it's true we've had our moments".

"He also reiterated denials that the Cabinet Secretary, Sir Gus O'Donnell, had ordered an investigation into Mr Brown's conduct. "If I had to guess whether Andrew Rawnsley or the Cabinet Secretary was telling the truth, I'd put my money on the Cabinet Secretary".

"The book alleges that Sir Gus became so alarmed by the Prime Minister's behaviour that he launched his own investigations when he received reports of Brown's bullying of staff. He then gave Mr Brown a stern "pep talk" and ordered him to change his behaviour. "This is no way to get things done," he told the Prime Minister".

"Later, talking to Sky News, Mr Rawnsley said: "I haven't won awards for journalism for making things up. I have not third hand, second hand, but first hand sources"."I do not say he launched a formal inquiry. I have no evidence for that. I do say he made his own inquiries and I'm absolutely confident of that".

"Downing Street has not sought to give a point by point rebuttal to the other allegations in the book, which include: Suggestions that he threw a secretary out of her seat when he judged she was not typing fast enough and took over the computer".

"Responding to news that the loss of confidential data disks, containing the personal details of more than 20 million people, he leapt across the room and grabbed Gavin Kelly, his deputy chief of staff by the lapels of his jacket and snarled: "They're out to get me!"

"During one rage in his official car he thumped the back of the passenger seat with such force that a protection officer sitting in the front flinched with shock".

"Yesterday, Mr Brown gave an interview to Channel 4 in which he denied ever hitting a member of his staff, an allegation which did not appear in the book. Mr Rawnsley called this bizarre and said he did not include anything which he was not absolutely sure about".

"Downing Street has issued a terse statement."The Prime Minister's official spokesman said: "These malicious allegations are totally without foundation and have never been put to No 10".
